If you’re reading this, it’s likely because your IB Physics grades didn’t go as planned, and I completely understand how disheartening that can feel. But don’t worry, you have several options to move forward:

Your IB Physics Grade is Not What You Hoped?
Your Three Options

  1. Request a Remark: If your grade is close to a boundary, a remark might push you over.
I have a complete guide to the IB Physics remark process here.
  2. Resit the Exam: This option requires more preparation, which we’ll dive into shortly.
  3. Move On with Your Current Grades: Sometimes it’s best to accept and move forward with life.

Since this post is about retaking your IB Physics exam, let's explore this option in more detail.

Resitting Your IB Physics Exam

Registration Deadlines for November Resits

  • Results Announcement: 6th of July
  • Early Registration Deadline: 29th of July
  • Final Registration Deadline: 15th of October

If you're considering resitting in the November session, registering before the 29th of July will save you money. You’ll need to register through your school or an IB institution. Your IB coordinator can provide costs and handle the admin work for you.

However, commitment is key—you must be ready to study diligently for the upcoming November session.

Successful Study for November Resits

Given the limited time between July and October, strategic studying is essential. That’s where GradePod shines, especially through our TrIBe Physics program. Our focus is on quickly improving your IB Physics grade with tried-and-tested methods.

Internal Assessment (IA) Considerations for IB Physics Retake

If your IA was strong, you don’t need to redo it. If not, you can opt to complete a new IA. However, there are two very important conditions that you will need to adhere to

Condition #1

You will need the support of an IB Institution with your IA. For most people, that will mean that you complete your new IA through the school that you attended. You'll need the support of a physics teacher, access to the school lab AND you'll need the physics teacher to mark your IA before it is sent away fro moderation.

Consideration #2

You new IB Physics IA must cover a completely different topic from your previous one. You can't improve or rehash your existing IA. You must start a new one from scratch with a completely different topic.

Key Facts About IB Physics Retakes

Retakes are available in November and May each year.

Registration Deadlines

November Retakes:

May Retakes:

  • January 29th: Lower registration fees deadline.
  • April 15th: Final registration deadline.

Subjects and Core Components:

You can retake any or all of your six course subjects and core components (Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity, Service).

You must retake all components of the subject, including written exams and IAs, unless your school allows you to keep your IA scores (see above)

Costs

Retake fees vary by region and school. Consult your IB Coordinator for specific costs and any late fees applicable.

Impact on University Applications

Many universities (particularly in the US) consider overall academic performance and extracurricular activities rather than just final IB grades. Final IB grades are often used for college credits rather than admissions decisions. In this case, the final IB Physics grade may not be relevant.

Research university policies on IB retakes and credits. If you choose to reapply to college, many will only see the final IB certificate with the retake grade on it. Communicate with admissions offices to understand how retake results will be considered.

If you choose to resit your IB Physics exam, use a gap year productively with internships, work, travel, or additional courses to strengthen your university application.

Steps to Register for a Retake

  1. Discuss with Your IB Coordinator: Understand the registration process, fees, and deadlines.
  2. Submit Registration: Ensure timely registration to avoid late fees.
  3. Prepare for the Exams: Use available resources and support to improve your performance.

Syllabus Changes

Be cautious about any syllabus changes between your initial exam and the retake. For example, if your original exams are in November 2024 and you want to resit in May 2025, a syllabus update in May 2025 means you'd be learning new material if you retook the exam in that session. Tackling a new syllabus requires dedication and possibly additional help.
